For winter was coming. The days were shorter, and frost crawled up the window panes at night. Soon the snow would come. Then the log house would be almost buried in snowdrifts and the lake and the streams would freeze. In the bitter cold weather Pa could not be sure of finding any wild game to shoot for meat.

Winter kommt. Die Tage sind kurzer, und kriecht der Frost am Nacht auf diesem Fensterglas. Bald wird die Schnee kommen. Denn wird das Blockhaus fast in Schneeverwehung vergraben und der See und die Bäche werden erfrieren. Während dieses bitteres kaltes Wetter, Pa kannt nicht von etwa finden das Wild für Essen, überzeugt sein.
